Projects Overview
With an array of projects spanning across multiple locations around the United Kingdom and Eire, as well as multiple sectors including Broadcast, Telecommunications, Power Generation, Utilities and Satellite & Media, AXD has a vast and diverse portfolio of works. The below image selection and case studies give further insight into some of the recent works carried out by AXD.

Project Case Studies
Two New Fibre Exchange Sites
Sunderland & Sheffield, United Kingdom
AXD were engaged by LARS Communications Ltd to construct two new FEx sites in Sheffield and Sunderland for their client, City Fibre. The work to build the new sites comprised of vegetation clearance, levelling off site and disposing of the spoil. AXD then constructed multiple large reinforced concrete rafts with integral beams, connected via underground ductwork, which would later provide a base for the specialist equipment. The sites were finished with decorative stone surfacing and security fencing, incorporating a concrete ant-dig cill for added security.
Airwave Emergency Services radio network
Multiple Locations, United Kingdom & Outer Herbrides
AXD have installed new concrete foundations & monopoles to replace old structures in the network, including cranage, rigging and antenna install. This has been done on sites across the whole of mainland UK and also the Outer Hebrides. AXD provide tracked cranes to access these remote sites then use this to lift into place new structures up to 20m tall, before removing the old structures. Often these old structures can be refurbished for subsequent re-use, reducing both waste and emissions. New concrete foundations are often needed which is challenging on mountainous locations, sometimes without road access. In contrast, other sites can be alongside public roads needing traffic management and drilling of an augured hole to receive a stub foundation.
Broadcast high mast site
Bilsdale, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
AXD was asked to assist a major Broadcast client following a fire at one of their main sites. AXD were on site the next day to assist the client with planning the recovery works. From AXD’s previous involvement with the site and wide construction knowledge, a feasibility study was provided for upgrading the access road and its weak bridge. AXD then designed & installed a temporary river bridge rated at 48 tons capacity, as well as 2.5 miles of tarmac road. AXD installed the ground elements of a 80m rapid deployable mast, then an 80m tower and associated compound. Following that, AXD refurbished multiple buildings on site during two challenging winters and a period of night working. Through our industry contacts we were able to provide a Principal Contractors site setup consisting of 10+ site offices with electrics and site lighting, walkways & hardstanding. Our traffic management operatives and heavy recovery machinery kept the clients site deliveries moving despite a steep and twisting route to site.
Broadcast small site Timber Poles
Multiple Locations, United Kingdom & Northern Ireland
AXD surveys, designs and replaces timber pole structures for a UK based Broadcast client. These sites are normally remote and carry signal to smaller villages difficult to reach from larger masts. Often the sites are in National Parks or AONB’s which makes the timber pole the only structure acceptable to Planning Authorities. Access is normally challenging but AXD use tracked plant to carry the new poles to site and lift them into position. AXD’s rigging teams install the TX and RX antennas and commission them for client acceptance before it is put into service. To date, AXD has replaced more than 60 poles on sites across Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
